Played through Silent Hill in Left 4 Dead 2.

(This is the unmaintained version with bugs.)

Overall, I'd say it's okay but not great. For all the fancy scripting involved, it didn't lock up.

With a group of players who never played Silent Hill, finishing this map took 6 hours, which is long but too long without being able to save and continue. At least in Left 4 Dead, the player can let a bot take over the character and take a break.

A few things to be careful about on this map:

  • The streets don't make sense: Finney Street will be a north-south road but become east-west at another point in the map, which might be normal for Silent Hill, so the map isn't helpful as one would expect from real life.
  • While looking for a way to progress, a teammate had jumped into a plausible-looking pit which the fall would be survivable; however, it had a kill brush.
  • Picking up key items or activating triggers will spawn multiple special infected on top of the players.
  • The progress screen can misrepresent the which mission is the rescue mission.

If I had either Left 4 Dead 3 or more custom maps to look forward to, I would appreciate non-linear maps where the player might need to read a map to get to certain places.

Played a Left 4 Dead 2 map called Questionable Ethics.

The plot is that the Survivors are trapped in a (financially impractical) testing facility full of death traps.

The map features an unconventional use of game mechanics from the base game. Some items on this map are locked behind display cases which can only be opened if the player collects a gas can and unloads into a reptacle.

I haven't played Versus on it yet. As it seems, player-controlled Chargers, Jockeys, and Smokers are exceptionally dangerous.
