Thanks for playing.
/v/ Xonotie 0.8.2 - Pacific / US West
was a server
hosted for /v/ starting in 2016. Formerly, this server was one of the most active servers in Xonotic
despite XonStats overreprresenting instagib CTF servers at the time.
(XonStats had measured popularity by the number of matches completed on
the server not the manhours spent. Therefore, it had favored game modes
that resolved in the shortest amount of the time.)
The server community started from a group of players who were mostly unfamiliar with arena FPS meta with some exceptions. The server later attracted players of the existing North American Xonotic community from various skill levels.
The server first began with near-default settings (“vanilla”) with game type voting and custom maps enabled during a time when instagib CTF was a popular game type.
Vanilla, even though this was not documented, was not considered appropriate by the community for the game types Race CTS and Duel. So the server was tweaked more to enable configurable balance settings. These respectively were Xonotic DeFrag and Xonotic Pro Mode.
The general playing experience of Xonotic steered towards free-for-all (FFA) Deathmatch. Often was interpreted that casual players enjoyed FFA as though it were an inherent inclination, or that the game mode was accessible and beginner friendly. However, the game mode was made popular by drop-in-drop-out multiplayer that enabled spontaneous match abandonment and teamplay frustrating.
To address this, the bots were tuned to be stronger. The server administrator shouldn’t have to do this, but waypoints had been added for custom maps where they are absent.
